The Yamatji Southern Regional Corporation (YSRC) Ranger Program is integrating environmental DNA (eDNA) into land- and sea-based activities that combine classroom learning with immersive on-Country experiences. Focused on the river–ocean interface and the Abrolhos Islands, this work supports a deeper understanding of Sea Country, strengthening environmental stewardship, cultural heritage, and the leadership of Traditional Owners in managing and caring for Country. Sampling is being undertaken across Sea Country and connected waterways, including the Abrolhos Islands, Chapman River, Irwin River, Geraldton Marina, and Dongara Marina.

By incorporating biomolecular tools alongside Traditional Ecological Knowledge, YSRC is expanding how nature is observed, understood, and protected. In partnership with Minderoo, this initiative is building capacity through training, knowledge exchange, and skills development. Beyond biodiversity monitoring, eDNA serves as a powerful tool for advocacy and conservation, supporting sustainable management, reinforcing cultural connections, and empowering future generations to care for Sea Country.
