The Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) is an independent Australian marine research organisation that delivers world-class research to inform decision making and management of the marine environment. As a joint venture partnership of state, federal, and academic institutions, WAMSI’s core business includes stakeholder engagement, planning for and managing multi-year science programs, disseminating knowledge through communication outputs and providing reliable data and information management. Celebrating its 20-year anniversary, WAMSI has journeyed through numerous large-scale and small-sale projects, continually improving and adapting to achieve best practice. We discuss the steps involved in planning, managing and finalising projects, including navigating Indigenous engagement and partnerships, and the challenges of measuring impact. Designing your project well from the start will ensure delivery of fit for purpose science that addresses funder and stakeholder needs, and has positive, lasting benefits to the marine environment and blue economy.
