eDNA metabarcoding can be used to estimate the relative biomass of organisms.  eDNA results for a single sample can only be used to determine presence of organisms, and the numbers associated with copies of DNA detected do not correlate with biomass on a single sample basis. However, with sampling replication, quantitative signals can be generated from eDNA datasets. This is an area of strong current research interest and there has been clear progress in recent years. I will briefly discuss relative quantification of species with eDNA metabarcoding and what can be expected in this area in the near future.
