This presentation introduces the African Ocean Biodiversity Atlas, a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing ocean awareness and promoting sustainable ocean management across Africa. The project focuses on developing and deploying multifunctional ocean applications and innovative technologies to support conservation and policymaking. Key components include the creation of a comprehensive Fisheries Atlas and a Blue Carbon Biodiversity initiative targeting Africa’s landing beaches, which provide critical insights and recommendations for the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). By fostering data sharing among local indigenous fishermen and stakeholders, the project enhances community engagement and traditional knowledge integration. It also establishes an extensive data repository encompassing diverse marine species such as fish, mangroves, algae, and seaweeds, facilitating better understanding and monitoring of marine biodiversity. Ultimately, the African Ocean Biodiversity Atlas is endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade, contributing to informed decision-making, regional cooperation, and the sustainable stewardship of Africa’s invaluable marine resources.
