Communities across Queensland are helping to forge a better future for the Reef, and wanting to do more to accelerate positive impacts in the face of a changing climate. What can further enable community-centred stewardship?

From 2018 to 2026, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation collaborated with partners to design, deliver, evaluate and learn from the Reef Trust Partnership Community Reef Protection program, enabling community action and stewardship for the Reef. More than 500 partners came together to deliver 94 on-ground projects that engaged communities in education, citizen science, on-ground action, skill-building and behaviour changes. The overarching program and projects explored ways to enable community influence and local action as an integral element of broader the broader Reef protection system, and focused on learning and adapting together along the way.

This presentation/poster will share case studies from across the program, including:

  • Pathways for strengthening citizen science data use and applications
  • Community Action Plans using collaborative planning to drive action
  • Accelerating community climate action readiness

We will reflect on learnings about key ingredients for enabling community stewardship – for individuals, organisations, places, programs and systems. We hope this session sparks discussions about insights from other contexts and shared priorities for stewardship research and practice.
