This presentation shares findings from a white paper on ocean literacy that contributed to Australia's National Marine Science Strategy 2026–36, one of 21 white papers shaping the nation's marine science priorities for the next decade. Ocean literacy was identified as a foundational capability within the Strategy, recognising that people and partnerships are central to delivering its outcomes.
As environmental pressures intensify and marine resource demands grow, Australians' capacity to engage with ocean issues, understand risks and opportunities, and participate in marine decision-making has never been more urgent. Yet significant gaps remain in how ocean literacy is embedded across education, policy, and public life.
The Australian Ocean Literacy Research Network has been building momentum to bring ocean literacy initiatives to life across Australia. The white paper sets out a national vision with three key enablers: enhancing ocean literacy for all Australians; delivering credible, actionable, and co-produced marine science; and developing future-ready education and training for the blue economy. We recommend coordinated national action, including establishing a consistent, adaptable national approach to ocean literacy across education levels and stakeholder groups invested in the health of Australia's marine territory.
Our vision is to empower all Australians to make informed, responsible choices that support a resilient and thriving ocean future.
