Torres Strait Regional Authority has embarked on a transformative journey to shift the way we work with Traditional Owners in the management of marine turtles and dugongs.
Since 2017, over 250 Traditional Owners were engaged on three occasions across 14 island communities to review and update historic turtle and dugong management plans. The original plans were heavily compliance-based, relying on limited resources. Consultation revealed this legislative approach was causing the erosion of cultural protocols, leading to potential increased pressure on the species. This finding demonstrated the need for government to reconsider its approach and develop plans that place greater trust in, and respect for, traditional customs and lore.
The revised culturally grounded, island specific plans have been returned to Traditional Owners. Traditional Governance Structures and cultural protocols will guide the management of turtle and dugong populations, supported by data collected by local Rangers. This ensures Traditional Owners have the information they need to make decisions about their sea country on their own terms.
The presentation will showcase how the integration of cultural protocols and contemporary management can work within a government setting, building stronger relationships with Traditional Owner while delivering outcomes for highly totemic species.
