From 2015 to 2024, CSIRO scientists led a series of RV Investigator voyages to the "upstream" East Australia Current, found in the waters of northern NSW and southern Queensland, largely in support of the IMOS East Australian Current transport array. The intensive and repeated nature of these voyages resulted in a wealth of new knowledge, from a more detailed understanding of the of the EAC itself, it's role in shaping marine ecosystems, the seafloor geomorphology of the region, and hints of the way the region is responding to climate change. These voyages have also been opportunities to train a generation of young ocean scientists, and a starting point for exciting new collaborations with Australian Marine Parks and indigenous ranger groups.
Here, we will highlight the achievements of these voyages, the work that is ongoing, and ideas for future research in this region.
