The community is generally unaware of the significant role that great whales play in increasing productivity at the base of the marine food chain that helps to capture carbon from the atmosphere. The WhaleX Foundation is partnering with whale watch operators, high school and university science educators to develop the next generation of citizen scientists on board whale watch vessels. Materials are presented as a series of bite sized cards that are easy to follow to develop skills to understand the interaction of whales with the ocean. Topics include the whale pump, plankton identification according to peer reviewed methods as well as observing the physical and biological parameters in which whales live and interact. Identification of plankton will use a low-cost microscope (Planktoscope) that is a device that utilises off-the-shelf components and open-source software for the classification and quantification of plankton. This device circumvents the high labour cost and taxonomic expertise required for traditional methods. The education materials will be distributed to whale watch operators, academics, schools and citizen scientists to help spread the word on how whales restore ocean ecosystems from the bottom of the food chain to the top while helping to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
