Australian Ports are centres of commercial and urban activity, with active environmental management required to maintain or enhance ecological functions within these heavily modified coastal systems. The OzFish Port River Shellfish Reef Restoration Program in South Australia demonstrates a collaborative, community-driven approach to restoring native oyster (Ostrea angasi) reefs within the highly urbanised Port River estuary. This project engaged local fishers, residents and stakeholders in the implementation of restoration structures, consisting of 1,200 robust oyster baskets filled with recycled oyster shells.   This project follows earlier trails, with over 400 volunteers contributing to the upscaled reef restoration efforts between 2024 to the reef deployment in Feb 2026. This case study highlights the opportunities and challenges for engaging port communities and stakeholders in upscaling oyster reef restoration within the urbanised Port River, along with early ecological results for coastal fish and sessile assemblages.
