The Australian Antarctic Strategy and the 2022 update commit to setting in place a comprehensive policy and scientific research approach for the sustainable management of the Southern Ocean krill fishery. A multidisciplinary large-scale krill ecosystem survey was conducted during January to March 2021 in the eastern sector of CCAMLR Division 58.4.2 utilising RV Investigator. We successfully estimated krill biomass and observed predators to improve our understanding on predator abundance, distribution, and its relationship with krill distribution and their habitat environment. Krill behaviour in the natural environment was observed using a swarm study system, and Krill Observational Moorings for Benthic Investigation (KOMBI) deployed on the seafloor which successfully recorded the behaviour of krill throughout a full year to understand the dynamics and use of habitat at the surface and the seafloor. Estimates of krill biomass from this voyage were endorsed by the Scientific Committee of CCAMLR and formed the basis for the catch limits in the revision of the krill Conservation Measure currently being considered by the CCAMLR Commission. The information gathered from the voyage also formed the basis for designing a tractable and sustainable long-term monitoring plan and to evaluate spatial management of the krill fishery.
