RRAP Indigenous Futures: Outcomes from a Three-Year Program Enabling Indigenous-Led Coral Larval Restoration and Marine Monitoring on the Great Barrier Reef  (139523)

RRAP Indigenous Futures was established to prepare Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owner groups for the emerging reef restoration and adaptation industry through capacity building grounded in Indigenous pedagogies and repeated hands on learning in coral larval restoration. The program demonstrates that Traditional Owner ranger groups can deliver deployment ready restoration interventions on their Sea Country and establish their role in future RRAP delivery. 

Across three years, approximately 30 Indigenous Rangers from eight groups completed training in coral spawning, larval rearing, settlement, deployment, site selection, monitoring and cultural mapping across multiple reef sites. The program was co designed with Indigenous governance groups and delivered under Free, Prior and Informed Consent, ensuring it remained grounded in cultural protocols and priorities. 

From a Traditional Owner perspective, this work reflects the ongoing cultural responsibility to care for Sea Country. Coral restoration is not only a technical activity, but part of active stewardship and knowledge transmission. Rangers have led coral spawning and restoration activities on their own Country, integrating Traditional ecological knowledge, such as seasonal indicators and environmental cues, with contemporary science to guide timing, site selection and restoration approaches. 

Final year outcomes show ranger led delivery of larval restoration meeting operational benchmarks, demonstrating a scalable model for First Nations led reef restoration that is both operationally effective and culturally grounded.
