Ungulates (hooved animals) cause enormous damage to wetlands across Australia, resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions, losses of biodiversity, diminished cultural values, and threats to biosecurity. Through cross-cultural and interdisciplinary collaboration, we are nearing completion of development of a new carbon abatement method for the Australian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme that would award a carbon credit for reduced emissions arising from managing ungulates in wetlands. We will provide an update on ACCU Scheme method development, including estimates of abatement, method structure, and remote sensing approaches, drawing on case studies conducted with partners on Country. We will also reflect on the process to date and outline challenges and opportunities associated with novel proponent-led carbon market method development in the marine and coastal space.
