Much of Australia’s taxonomic expertise is based at publicly funded institutions - museums, herbaria and university laboratories. However, marine ecologists working on private sector projects generate vast amounts of often unpublished biodiversity data that never enters the public domain. This brief presentation offers the perspective from a marine consultant of 25 years-experience, on how collaborative relationships can contribute to improvements to taxonomy and our biodiversity knowledge-base.
