Nathalie M Simmonds
Nathalie Simmonds is an interdisciplinary marine scientist and PhD candidate at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security, University of Wollongong. Her research explores ocean literacy as a critical enabler of effective marine governance, with a focus on marine protected area management, stakeholder engagement, and place-based stewardship.
She is the founder of the Abyss Project, a UNESCO-endorsed ecotourism initiative that bridges science, storytelling, and immersive ocean experiences to deepen public connection with the marine environment. Her work sits at the intersection of science, policy, and community, integrating Indigenous knowledge systems to support more inclusive and adaptive approaches to ocean governance.
