Brodee BL Lowe

Brodee Lowe is a PhD candidate at Curtin University's Centre for Marine Science and Technology and Director and Co-Founder of the Marine Industry Mentoring (MIM) Network and Marine Fauna Observation Services (MFOS) Australasia. Her research focuses on the acoustic ecology and socio-cultural valuation of pygmy blue whales in South West Western Australia, integrating over 20 years of passive acoustic monitoring data (CTBTO) with long-term visual and photo-identification datasets to quantify migration phenology, connectivity, behaviour, and population trends in alignment with IWC priorities. Brodee has over 10 years of experience across marine research and environmental consulting, with expertise in passive acoustic monitoring, bioacoustics, and marine megafauna survey methods. Her broader research involves working with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal Corporations to recognise the cultural heritage values of marine mammals, incorporating language and traditional ecological knowledge into marine monitoring programs and supporting healthy Country and marine management outcomes. She has co-authored peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in marine mammal ecology, behaviour, and acoustics. Through MIM Network and MFOS Australasia, she coordinates field-based research programs and undergraduate student placements, and is committed to mentorship and building capacity across the marine science sector.
