Nicole Rodriquez

Nicole Rodriquez is an environmental management professional and Honours researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast with a passion for achieving meaningful outcomes and a genuine enthusiasm for environmental stewardship. She holds an Undergraduate Certificate in Animal Ecology and a Bachelor of Environmental Management with a minor in Marine and Coastal Ecology and is currently completing a Bachelor of Science (Honours). Nicole's research explores how colonial legacies continue to shape dugong (Dugong dugon) research and management in Queensland, particularly through the historic exclusion of Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK), governance, and authority. Her work seeks to contribute to more inclusive approaches to conservation by recognising the value of Indigenous knowledge systems and Indigenous-led stewardship. Her research interests centre on the order Sirenia, with a particular focus on dugongs, as well as the broader ecology, conservation, and management of marine mammals. She is passionate about fostering greater inclusion of Indigenous Peoples, knowledges, and perspectives within science and environmental management, while supporting more equitable and culturally informed approaches to research and decision-making. Nicole is committed to supporting diverse voices in science and promoting collaboration between Indigenous and Western knowledge systems to help address contemporary environmental challenges.
